Warhammer 40K space marine demo review

Space marine is set to be released on the 9th of September but now you can download the demo which takes you through two short missions fighting. Here is my review of the demo.

The two missions features you (playing as Captain Titus) and two other space marines from your squad, unfortunately for you chaos lovers you only fight orks in the missions. In those two missions you will gain access to some great weapons such as the standard bolter and chainsword but eventually you will get a long range rifle and a grenade launcher and eventually a thunder hammer.

Basically what you do in the two missions is kill orks for ten minutes, now that might sound boring but with the amount of gore and moves you can do especially with the chainsword makes the game fun, also what little we see of the story looks good.

However there are some problems regarding that I encountered some glitches where my allies got stuck in walls and enemy’s didn’t respond to 3 space marines running through their ranks, these can be fixed as it isn’t final, also I liked the idea of to regenerate health you should unleash visual violent death of your foes I found myself constantly looking at my health meaning I didn’t enjoy as much as I should the great attack animations.
Overall this review is pointless so I won’t give it a score as it is free, just get it if you are at all interested in space marine, and if you don’t know if you like it then the demo will let you know if it is for you.

LA noire review

Much of the reviews that I have seen are saying the same thing about LA noire now here is my take on the Latest game from Rockstar and Team Bondi.

LA noire’s story is so good that I will just tell you what you probably already know, you play as Cole Phelps as you rise through the ranks of the LAPD (patrol, traffic, homicide, vice and Arson) each desk is interesting and it is good to see how the police was like in that time period where warrants weren’t needed and tensions are high between the different desks. Each desk has a partner who are varied and have their own personalities; partners help you if you are confused and assist in gunfights and brawls.

On each case you will be presented with a crime scene where you have to find evidence and interview people of interest, when interviewing you have to analyse the persons facial expressions and tell whether they are telling the truth, or if you doubt there evidence or accuse them of lying in which case you will need to produce evidence to prove it. However you will also get into more action situations such as a car chase, a brawl, a gunfight or a chase on foot. All these features are believable and work.

The sound to LA noire is just incredible. Not only is the voice acting amazing the music is to and changes dramatically to suite to mood, however it is the sheer size of actors and actresses that lend not only there voice but their faces to the game, both of which are critical to interrogation, Rockstar also made great efforts to make sure that the pedestrians are individuals with their own voices as there are over 20 voices for the public.

However there are a few problems if you are a 360 owner then you will see some glitches like cars disappearing and on one occasion the audio cut out for a few moments but these aren’t a huge problem considering the graphics are amazing, it’s no wonder that the game come on three disks on the 360, so if you want the best experience then buy it for PS3. Also the lack of side missions is annoying, apart from collecting the insane amount of cars (over 90) and responding to dispatch calls there isn’t anything to do, plus you can’t pull out your gun and randomly kill people like in the GTA games but I wasn’t bothered about that.

LA noire deserves an 8/10. The game is so hard to put down but it can get repetitive so take it a case at a time. However there isn’t much to its core, but the amazing story and fun and interesting gameplay make it a winner. Buy this game!!

Soon I will review the downloadable content for LA noire starting with Nicolson Electroplating, if you have any comments or want to suggest another game to review, then please comment it would help a lot, soon you will see a review for Alan Wake and for flight sim fans the A2a simulations spitfire.

Empire and Napoleon total war review

Empire total war is set in the 18th century which was a time where guns were the main weapon in an armies arsenal and the tactics of warfare really changed it was around this time that the American revolution happened and the Napoleonic wars.

You in the game can control one of many superpowers in the game and lead them to greatness by completing specific objectives such as capture a certain number of cities before a certain year, it is pretty much the same formula that the total war games have followed for years with a few differences one being that the character such as Diplomats have been removed and only two remain Gentlemen and Rakes. Gentlemen help with research and can challenge other Gentlemen to duels; Rakes act as the assassins and spy and can infiltrate cities, assassinate a key leader or destroy certain buildings. Now things like diplomacy are done on a separate screen meaning diplomats don’t have to spend ages traveling. All of this is done on the campaign map until a battle begins where the view changes to a real time tactical battle where you control your troops, the battles are just as good as they ever were and the new tactics that you have to deploy using rank and file and utilising your gunmen to devastating effect. Now the few improvements to the battles are that your units can take cover in buildings and build fortifications like small trenches.

Empire also includes sea battles a first for the series and they are one of the best parts as the trade-off between smaller faster ships and the huge ones that are slower is really apparent, for different ship you will use different tactics for the faster ones you should destroy the sails and for larger ships you could target the hull to sink it.

The graphics are excellent and if you have the system to run it then you will love the visuals. The sounds are also very good with good voice acting and battle sounds.

The game has the typical problems associated with these games the Ai can be annoying not accepting proposals that would benefit them and the area in the main campaign is so massive that it can’t fit on one map meaning a lot of switching back and forth between maps which is tiresome. Plus the only way for ships to travel between maps is through these narrow corridors which a smart person could just blockade and stop all opposing ship travel, not that the AI uses the travel system.

In the end the game is great but the problems are apparent and will detract from the experience and with such as huge map managing your empire takes a long time meaning without anything really new and fresh I got bored after a few turns. The final rating is a 7/10 if you have the patience to play it you will enjoy empire if not you might find it hard to play for any prolonged period of time.

Now napoleon is different it focuses on the exploits of napoleon through the different regions he fought in, Italy, Egypt, Europe and ending with Waterloo, the core is still the same and outside of napoleons campaign the problems with the length of management time still stand, I just don’t feel that the creative assembly pulled out all the stops to improve and innovate, therefore Napoleon total war gets a 5/10 only for diehards total war fans.

Grand ages Rome review

Grand ages Rome is a city builder for the PC it is set in Rome and allows you to construct huge cities and you have to take into account the popularity and build accordingly.

There isn’t really a story in Grand ages Rome the campaign is made up of different missions that take place in all areas of the Roman Empire and you have to complete the objectives and move on to another mission.

The best mode in the game has to be free build which is basically where you are faced with a big map of your choice and you have to build a city from scratch with no objectives.

The graphics are very good if you have the system to run it, the only thing that doesn’t look good is the character models and the fighting animations but when you consider it isn’t designed as a combat game and focuses more on building then you can get over it.

The sound is very good and the soundtrack as the game is running is brilliant and sound as you would expect an ancient Rome game to sound, also the city sounds of all the people and the sounds of the shops and buildings are excellent. Also the sound of the weather while there are only 2 types of weather sunny and raining only one of which has sound is done well.

The bottom line is if you like a slow paced city builder with great sound effects and good building graphics then you will like the game; the best version to buy is the gold edition which comes with the Augustus expansion featuring a second campaign with more missions. The verdict is a 8/10 the reason being is that while free build is good it doesn’t do much to keep you engaged during that mode and the campaign is alright but is dull and doesn’t feature a whole story, what would have been good for free build were random events like an earthquake or a flood that tests you to recover quickly before your population gets too low and fires and riots break out.

If you have a game that I should review then comment and tell me it would really help me find out what my community wants. Thank you.
