Dante’s inferno review

Dante’s inferno was overshadowed by God of war 3, reviewers complained that some of the later levels were boring and generic, this might be true but the difference I have is if those downsides critically affect my enjoyment.

The story loosely follows the poem it’s based on. Dante returns home after fighting the crusades to find his wife murdered and her soul taken by Lucifer into hell, Dante follows them through the nine circles of hell Limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery. This is only the first part in the poem so I expect EA will eventually try to make the second part which focuses on Dante’s assent through purgatory.

The graphics are brilliant in Dante’s inferno with hell being the star while there is a significant difference in the size of the areas making you feel claustrophobic in some places, the areas where there is a lot to see don’t disappoint and reflect the different sins. Dante himself is modelled very well with the huge scythe on his back.

This is where the comparisons to God of war start as they play exactly the same there is a light and heavy attack and you use combo’s for extra damage, Dante also has a ranged weapon which is a holy cross which can be levelled up similar to the scythe by collecting holy or unholy souls. At certain points during the game Dante will come across famous figures that he can either absolve or punish them giving you either holy or unholy souls.

The soundtrack is amazing and fits the time period and the location perfectly through most of it is just ambiance. It is slow paced during normal sections then it speeds up and gets louder during a set piece or a boss. The voice acting too is great as there are only about 4 people who speak English, Dante’s lines aren’t cliché and he will show emotion in some scenes.

I really like Dante’s inferno as it’s basically Xbox’s god of war or the closes we can get to it, but it does its own thing having a better story and atmosphere. I give the game an 8/10 because it does fall flat in some areas fraud especially is a level that could have used a lot more creative thought it’s basically you going from platform to platform and completing tasks such as kill all enemies without using magic or stay in the air for 8 seconds.
